A few years ago, before I knew anything about the glycemic index or most of the other stuff I write about and teach I went on a diet to lose weight. I am not sure which one I was following, but for the purposes of this discussion it doesn't matter. I drank coffee at the time and started drinking Chai lattes with a shot of espresso. Did you know Chai lattes are like 500 calories!?! And they are high glycemic! Not something to drink if you are trying to lose weight. More like the opposite.

It's not just coffee you have to watch out for. Everyone knows regular sodas are full of sugar and bad for you, especially if you are trying to lose weight. But did you know that in a study following diet soda drinkers and regular soda drinkers, the diet soda drinkers gained more weight than the regular soda drinkers? The scientists did not know why but it is guessed that diet sodas as well as artificial sweeteners may be high glycemic.

Did you know that juices too are high glycemic? The interesting thing is that there are all of these diets and infomercials selling juicers and high powered blenders. These claim you can lose weight and get healthy by throwing whole food into the machine and drinking what comes out. This is actually true to an extent. But store-bought juices are both high glycemic and pasteurized, so avoid them if you are trying to lose weight.
